Student Teaching

The University Place School District partners with between 15-20 student teaching candidates each year. We believe strongly in the importance of a valuable student teaching experience that exposes candidates to the work of a teacher. By placing student teaching candidates with expereienced mentor teachers we hope to instill a research-based approach to helping each student teacher make instructional decisions that have the most impact on their students.

Student Teacher Placement Application Process

Student Teacher Agreement/Contract

If a college or university wishes to place a student from their education program in the University Place School District for practicum/observation and/or student teaching, we must first have the following documents on file in HR:

  1. Current MOU between the college or university and the University Place School District
  2. Proof of Liability Insurance

Requesting a Placement

All requests from college or university supervisors for practicum/observation and/or student teaching placements should be made directly to Executive Director of Human Resources, Eric Brubaker (ebrubaker@upsd83.org). Arrangements for placement should not be initiated by the student. College or university supervisors must provide a complete student teacher application packet which includes:

  1. Student teacher’s current resume
  2. Proof of fingerprinting*
  3. Proof of liability insurance
  4. Washington State Pre-Residency Certificate of Clearance

*The State of Washington requires that all student teachers be fingerprinted before starting in their school. Requests for placement will not be processed and student teachers will not be allowed into the school without proof of current fingerprints.

Upon receipt of a complete student teaching packet, HR will consider placement and respond back to the college or university supervisor with a decision. In order to meet the needs of the numerous colleges and universities, a student teacher placement request must be sent to the Executive Director of Human Resources by May 1st for the upcoming school year.
