Proposition 2 - 859

Proposition 2 – 859

Proposition 2 is a school construction bond for the purposes of replacing the district’s oldest buildings- Sunset Primary, Chambers Primary, and the 100, 200, 300 and 400E buildings at Curtis High School.  These structue were constructed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, are in poor condition and no longer meet programmatic needs.  The last school construction bond was approved by voters in 2006 and expires in 2007.

[District Name] serves the residents of approximately 100 square miles in southwest [County Name]. This area includes 53 square miles in the City of [City Name], and parts of the cities listed below.

School construction bonds are necessary to build or replace schools in Washington State. Several schools in UPSD are between 50 and 60 years old, in poor condition and no longer meet the learning needs of students.

The last construction bond was approved by voters 20 years ago in 2006 and resulted in the replacement of University Place Primary and Curtis Junior High Schools. Tax collections from the 2006 bond will end in 2027. Additional investments are needed to maintain quality learning environments for students at all of our schools.

Proposition #2 asks voters to approve a school construction bond in a February 2026 special election in the amount of $295,000,000 for the following:

  • Total replacement of Sunset and Chambers Primary Schools with elimination of portables to improve safety.
  • Demolition of CHS 100, 200, 300 and 400E buildings
  • New construction of a safer and more secure "main building" connected to the newest portion of the CHS 400W building to establish a single, connected building.
  • New construction at CHS would include a Performing Arts Center for music and theater, new music classrooms and modern classrooms to support Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs.
  • Minor renovation to CHS 500 building with a secure connection to the new building
  • Minor improvements to the CHS 400W (HVAC, etc.)
  • Major site work to improve access and parking at CHS, Sunset and Chambers
  • Improvements to district recreational/athletic facilities

In the last five years, school construction bonds were approved in multiple districts across Pierce County to replace older buildings in Tacoma, Franklin Pierce, Bethel, Fife, Sumner-Bonney Lake and Peninsula School Districts.
